Southern style…oh yeah, baby

December 30th, 2008 | Funny stuff

I must take a moment to share with you a bit of what’s taking up space on my DVR right now.  My hubby’s a wee bit obsessed with deer hunting right now.  I mean at this moment, we’re watching freaking Ted Nugent’s Spirit of the Wild!  Anyway, I handed over the remote tonight and was hit with this beauty of an intro to a hunting show…

Seriously.  I mean, seriously.  At first, I started to giggle…and then I think my mouth just hung open.  What’s most hilarious about this is that MY HUSBAND WATCHES THIS!!

I do have better things to blog, but I had to share this tonight :)   Please have a Safe and Happy New Year!

Giving is Awesome…the gift

December 24th, 2008 | Blog Specials & Contests

I never knew what an impact this give-away would have on me.  It’s so ridiculous to call it a “contest” or award a “winner” when we’re talking about struggling families.  These stories have been heartbreaking and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wept in the past weeks over them.  I received the first nomination just a few hours after announcing the give-away and I spent the rest of the day with this family’s story heavy on my heart and mind.  It touched me deeply and I knew I would need help deciding who would be given the gift if I should receive any other nominations.  Well, three more came in, so I enlisted some friends and family to help me out.

The holiday season is busy for all of us.  I’ve spent the past week in a tizzy, preparing for baking, cleaning, visiting family, gift-giving, and travel.  I’ve had one of the best Christmas Eve’s I’ve ever had.  We had wonderful food, visiting family that we’ve been longing to see, an amazing church service, and grateful and appreciative boys opening gifts tonight.  When I realized at 9:45 p.m. that I still needed to turn on my computer and blog about the winner, I was bummed–at first.  But now, I’m so grateful for this time to reflect on my blessings and be able to give back to others who may be struggling with some aspect of their lives.

So now, I will announce the “winner”–but I will still be giving to all four nominated families.  I’ve decided that there was no way for me to say no to any one of these deserving families, so I will be offering a complimentary session and a $150 print credit to the other three families.

The custom photography give-away will go to Andy and Suse.  They were nominated by Andy’s sister-in-law, Wendy, and this is a bit of what she writes about their story:

My brother-in-law, Andy, and his wife, Suse, pursued the avenue of foster care to adoption.  Their perspective was that they knew they’d be taking in a child who desperately needed a family, and that some of these might be children that others might not consider to be ideal.  They brought their first foster baby home straight from the hospital.  The mother’s rights were terminated due to her drug usage at the child’s birth.  He had some mild disabilities and they went above and beyond in caring for and loving him…all the while pursuing his adoption.  After a year of raising “their” baby…he was sent to live with his biological father and their hearts were broken.  Shortly after, they took in Izak at just a few weeks old.  He was a baby whose mother was a drug user and couldn’t identify the father.  Then, when Izak was just 8 months old, they were given the opportunity to take in Ellie (a newborn who was born to the first drug-addicted mother).  So, Andy and Suse were now raising two babies and giving them more love and affection than they would ever have known in their entire lives if they had remained in their biological homes.  After 2 years of battling for adoption rights for Izak, and one year plus of battling for adoption rights for Ellie…they were able to adopt Izak and Ellie “officially” into their family this summer.  What a huge relief for the entire extended family.  They made a decision for Suse to stay at home to care for the children while Andy worked full-time.  They could barely make ends meet, were getting behind in debt, and recently decided that Suse would begin working nights and weekends to help supplement the income (i.e., Andy and Suse would sacrifice pretty much any time together).  One week after she began her part-time work, Andy was laid off from his job as a call center trainer due to the economy.  Custom photography would never be an option for them – they’ve never even been able to afford a JCPenney/Target photography session for their 1 and 2 year-old beauties.  I don’t think they have any formal pictures of the children, just snapshots.  I can’t imagine a better gift to them than to be able to capture Izak and Ellie in their first adopted year in their family.  They are beautiful and loved children who are lucky enough to be adopted into a Christian family who has everything (except, of course…money).

This is just one of the many examples of adoption stories I’ve been served up in the past few weeks, which have done some serious yanking on my heart strings.  Tonight at the Christmas Eve service, the pastor listed three things to consider about Christmas:  Christmas is about adoption, Christmas is about remembering, and Christmas is about light.  When I saw that first point up on the screen, Jason and I just looked at each other, smiled and shook our heads.  The adoption messages have gotten seriously out of hand!  (Some of you may be wondering how Christmas is about adoption.  The pastor was talking about how Jesus “adopted” others and took them in and how Joseph essentially adopted Jesus even though he wasn’t his son–I promise you it made sense!)

I’m wishing you all peace, love, and happiness this holiday season.  I’m on vacation for the next week or so, but I’ll be touch with the nominated families after the new year.

God bless,

Kelly

The Wright Family {Leavenworth Family Photographer}

December 22nd, 2008 | Children, Families

When I received a call from Laura, who was inquiring about getting some family photos taken since they had just come home from China with their newly adopted little girl, Lily, it brought tears to my eyes.  Not only is adoption such an amazing gift–for the child and the family–but this call came at such and interesting time.

My husband and I have always talked about wanting to adopt at some point in our lives.  At Thanksgiving, we spent some time with my friends from high school, Adam and Joey Gaines.  After having two children of their own, they decided to foster and then eventually adopt.  They are now a family of seven, with three adopted children.  After hearing and being so touched by their story, God started sending me some heavy messages.  I’m not kidding when I say that on almost a daily basis since Thanksgiving, Jason and I have been touched by adoption stories–on tv, connecting with long lost friends on MySpace or Facebook who’ve adopted, commercials about local fostering/adoption agencies in Kansas City, clients and co-workers, etc.  It’s really almost comical.

The Wright family was such a joy to spend the afternoon with.  Lily has adapted so quickly and loves her new brothers, Max and Ian, to the point of smothering–but they don’t mind at all!  :)   She’s got her pink flowery bedroom with a closet full of clothes, which I know was fun for Laura, and a family that adores her.  It’s amazing to witness how much she’s blessed this family, as much as she has been blessed by them.  Maybe one day, we’ll have that same thing for ourselves.

Lily was blessed with a loving foster family in China.  This necklace and bracelet were gifts from them and Laura said she never takes them off.

Kelly…these are fantastic! Clearly, Lily has found her forever family. I’m so excited that you’ve heard so many whispers through many connections lately to consider the incredible journey of adoption. I promise to send you Reagan’s story this afternoon…I could talk about our journey to her all day long!

Merry Christmas,
Bonnie

Holiday fun…

December 21st, 2008 | Personal

From my friend, Melissa

1.  Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
I honestly have never tried Egg Nog, but I did buy some this year and am looking forward to trying it.  My preference would be some sort of holiday flavored coffee.

2.  Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Santa wraps the gifts.  Being a military family that always travels back to Kansas to spend the holidays with extended family, Santa always has to “find us” wherever we are.  This will be our first holiday with the boys where Santa will visit our own home!

3.  Colored lights on tree/house or white?
White only.

4.  Do you hang mistletoe?
We did last year…it made for an interesting holiday party.

5.  When do you put your decorations up?
Usually the weekend after Thanksgiving…or the following weekend.

6.  What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Hmm, I love my mom’s and my mother-in-law’s cornbread stuffing.  Both are very different, but oh so good.

7.  Favorite holiday memory as a child:
Well, I can’t think of a favorite, but I definitely have a most memorable.  When I was junior high age, probably 13 or so, I really wanted a phone for my room.  I spotted a present under the tree that looked just like it would be a phone.  I even made a little rip in the paper.  On Christmas morning, I told Dad it was the first one I wanted to open.  I noticed, as he handed it over, that there was no rip in the paper (foreshadowing here).  I ripped it open and it was a tampon box with a brick in it.  Yep, those are some good holiday memories!  (I got the phone…last gift I opened.)

8.  When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
In second grade.  We had family visiting so I had to sleep in my brother’s room.  I woke up to some commotion and saw my parents putting together a baby carriage–with a lot of frustration, thus the commotion.  In the morning, “Santa” had left me a baby carriage.  I must have known better than to confront my parents about it because they don’t remember it.

9.  Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
Usually one.

10.  How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
White lights, gold and dark red balls and ornaments and various gifted ornaments we’ve accumulated through the years.  We’ve started putting up another small tree in the dining room with all the boy’s homemade ornaments.

11.  Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Um, a bit of both.  I mostly dread when it melts and everything is so dirty.

12.  Can you ice skate?
I’ve only been once.  During my freshman year in college, my sorority pledge class did a sneak to Kansas City and we ice skated then.  It’s not really my favorite thing.

13.  Do you remember your favorite gift?
I was so happy to finally get a Cabbage Patch doll in grade school.  His name was Benton Lew and I loved the way his hair smelled like baby powder.  You don’t even want to know how my Dad made THAT Christmas special (kind of like the tampon box and brick).  Let’s just say it had to do with little Benton Lew suspended from the ceiling.

14.  What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Definitely time with family and teaching the boys what Christmas is really all about.

15.  What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
Sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting and the cookies with Hershey’s Kisses on them that my Grandma used to make.

16.  What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Hot chocolate, Christmas movies, and a roaring fire.

17.  What tops your tree?
Sadly nothing…it’s too weak to hold anything.

18.  Which do you prefer giving or receiving?
Honestly, I love both.

19.  What is your favorite Christmas Song?
Oh Holy Night.  I cry every stinkin’ time I hear it!

20.  Candy Canes…yuck or yum?
Yuck.

21.  What do you want for Christmas?
Um, I pretty much took care of myself before the holidays.

 22.  Do you attend an annual Christmas Party?
Not usually…it’s different every year, depending on where we are.

23.  Do you dress up on Christmas or wear PJs?
Pajamas for opening presents, casual clothes for the rest of the day.

24.  Do you own a santa hat?
Yep, each boy has one.

25.  Who do you normally spend Christmas with?
Our immediate family, of course, and then Jason’s parents and brother + his family, and then my parents and brother + his family.  Later Christmas day we always go to my Aunt Marilyn’s in Salina to spend it with extended family.

This is my favorite Christmas photo…me, 2 years old, crashed out under the tree with a tight hold on my gifts.

Check back Christmas Eve for the winner of the Giving Is Awesome custom photography giveaway.  Merry Christmas!

Riley-dog

December 18th, 2008 | Personal

Our 8 year old yellow lab, Riley, otherwise known as Ri, Freak Dog, or Riley Jo, has been on my mind quite a bit lately.  Mostly because he’s under my feet most of the day and pawing at me most of the evening, but also because I’ve finally broke down and agreed to let my husband get another.  Some dedicated blog readers may remember our adoption of Fresco last October.  Although we loved him dearly, sadly it didn’t work out due to some aggression issues.  Fresco’s originial foster mom, Kim, never lost faith in him, put all her heart and soul into training him and working through his issues and then adopted him!  I was so thankful for that happy ending and that I still get to see pictures of him.  (Visit Kim’s blog to see him in their holiday photo!)

Anyway, I’ve been worried about how Riley will feel about bringing a puppy into the family.  He seemed pretty sad about Fresco getting so much attention from us.  Lately, Riley’s been developing some different behavior.  He now barks at the back door when he wants in.  That has never happened before–Riley’s always been so patient and has had the best manners.

In the evenings, after I’ve finally left my computer and sit down in the living room to hang with the family or watch tv, he must have my attention.  He puts his paw up on my leg and if I start to pet him, he just paws me again.  If I get down on the floor with him, he just paws me.  He MUST have his paw up on me.  It is the weirdest thing and I don’t know what he wants.  I let him out, I pet him, I rub his belly, I get him a bone, I make sure he has water–I don’t know what he wants!!!  If I ignore him, he goes and stands in directly in front of the tv and stares at me.  It’s really pretty hilarious.

And speaking of hilarious, I found quite a few pictures of Riley over the years.  These cannot be classified as torture…he likes it–really he does!

My crazy friend, Kelly (in the bone picture), is responsible for all the weird things we put Riley through.  She likes to experiment with what Riley will put up with since he so agreeable.  Her favorite thing to do is give him a spoonful of peanut butter and watch him lick it off the roof of his mouth.  I do believe she’s peed her pants watching that.  I may even have a video of it.  :)

Besides being extremely patient and agreeable to whatever we want to do to him, Riley is amazing with the boys.  We got Riley as a puppy when I was just 6 weeks pregnant with Jake, so he’s essentially our first baby.  He’s just grown accustomed to being used as a wrestling partner or stepstool for our boys.  Even though Jake has grown up with him, he’s never been as close to him as Cody is.  Cody loves on Riley–a lot.  And in return, Riley may get a crumb on the floor, or an occasional lick of peanut butter on Cody’s cheek.

The other day my dad sent me this video with the message, “who does this remind you of?”  This is a perfect example of Riley and Cody’s relationship.

Yes, I did mention that we’re getting another.  As much as I’d love to adopt a shelter dog, it’s my turn to compromise and give my husband his way (but just this one time!).  We’ll be getting a female yellow lab in March.  I’m just hoping that what Riley’s trying to communicate with his nightime pawing is that he really wants a little sister.  Let’s hope.
